Founded in 1934, South African Airways (SAA) is the flag carrier of South Africa. It is also the largest airline in South Africa. Its company slogan is bringing the world to Africa and taking Africa to the world. It was the winner of the Best Airline Staff in Africa in Skytrax World Airline Awards 2016.

South African Airways  is owned by the Government of South Africa. The headquarters and its operational hub are both located at OR Tambo International Airport.


South African Airways has one airline subsidiary called Mango. Together with its subsidiary, South African Airways flies to over 42 domestic and international destinations in 26 countries across all 6 inhabited continents including Abu Dhabi, Buenos Aires, Beijing, Colombo, Düsseldorf, Fort Lauderdale, Las Palmas, London, Melbourne, Osaka, Rome and Washington.

South African Airways is currently a member of the Star Alliance airline alliance. It has codeshare agreements with several major carriers across the globe including Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, JetBlue, Emirates, Asiana Airlines, Air New Zealand, United Airlines, Jet Airways, RwandAir, and Virgin Australia.

South African Airways current fleet includes Airbuses A319-100, A320-200, A330-200, A330-300, A340-300, and A340-600. The fleet also consists of Boeing 737-800 totalling to around 52 aircrafts. The airline is now in the process of acquiring more Airbus aircrafts.

South African Airways offers two cabin configuration on all its flights. These are the Business class, and the Economy class. Depending on the aircrafts, seats are arranged in either 2-2-2- or 2-2 layouts. Passengers in Business class will be provided with welcome pack, duvet, pillow and personal touchscreen monitor. In the Economy class, passengers will receive welcome pack, blanket and pillow but with smaller seats and touchscreen monitors. In-flight magazines can be found in all cabin configurations. Three-course meals are provided on long-haul and medium-haul flights and snacks are available on short-haul ones.

South African Airways frequent flyer program is called Voyager. There are five membership tiers and miles can be earned with other airline and business partners. Benefits include excess baggage allowance, priority check-in and boarding and access to lounges.

On the ground, South African Airways offers passengers the use of two of its own lounges at OR Tambo International Airport. The lounges are Cycad First Class Lounge and Baobab Business Class Lounge. The lounges are available for Business class passengers and voyager members on higher tiers. Around the world, South African Airways passengers can also have access to other lounges operated by Star Alliance members depending on ticket classes and Voyager membership.

South African Airways  baggage allowance varies according to ticket classes and flight routes. In general, Business class passengers are allowed two bags each weighing 32kg to most of the destinations. Economy class passengers may be  allowed either one or two  23kg bag depending on destinations. Excess baggage allowance can be purchased either in advance or during check-in.
