Founded in 1953, Deutsche Lufthansa AG or Lufthansa is the largest German airline and was once the German flag carrier. Its company slogan is nonstop you. It was named as Europe’s Leading Airline for five consecutive years in the World Travel Awards from 2011 to 2016.

It was a state-owned company until 1994 when it becomes a publicly traded company with the headquarters located in Cologne. The airline operates from its primary hub called Lufthansa Aviation Centre (LAC) in Frankfurt Airport. Its secondary hub is in Munich Airport where the majority of its pilots, flight attendants and ground staff are based.

Lufthansa has a huge number of airline subsidiaries including Air Dolomitic, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, and Lufthansa CityLine. It also has other aviation affiliated subsidiaries such as Lufthansa Consulting and Lufthansa Systems. Together with its subsidiaries, Lufthansa flies to over 200 domestic and international destinations across 80 countries.

Lufthansa is one of the founding member of Star Alliance airline alliance formed in 1997. It has codeshare agreements with well over 30 other carriers across the globe including Thai Airways, United Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings.

Lufthansa current fleet includes Airbuses A319-100, A320-200, A320neo,  A321-100, A321-200, A321neo, A330-300, A340-300, A340-600, A350-900, and A380-800. The fleet also consists of Boeings 747-400, 747-8, and 777-9 totalling to around 270 aircrafts.

Lufthansa offers a mixture of three to four cabin configurations depending on the routes. First class is offered in most long-haul flights and it boasts seats that convert to two-metre bed, entertainment facilities and on-demand meals. Business class is available on all long-haul flights with new larger seats being rolled out. Premium Economy class is recently introduced which boasts larger seats and 12 inches seat-back entertainment screen. The Economy class provides fairly standard facilities equivalent to most major airlines around the world.

Lufthansa offers high quality in-flight services. Its Audio Video on Demand (AVOD) in-flight entertainment service is available on all long-haul aircrafts and features selections of films and music from around the world. Hot meals are provided on long-haul and medium-haul flights whereas small snacks will be provided on short-haul flights. Passengers can request for special meals according to dietary requirements including halal option and this should be done 24 hours before departure. Alcoholic beverages are complimentary.

Lufthansa frequent flyer program is called Miles & More. This is shared among other several European airlines including its subsidiaries. Miles can also be earned on Star Alliance partner flights.

On the ground, Lufthansa operates four different types of lounges. These are First Class Lounge, Senator Lounge, Business Lounge and Welcome Lounge. All the lounges are available for First class passengers and Miles & More members with Senator status. Business class passengers and Miles & More members with Frequent Traveller status can have access to Business and Welcome Lounges. For added luxury, First class passengers and HON Circle members can access Lufthansa First Class Terminal only available at Frankfurt Airport which boasts restaurant, bar, cigar lounge and bath facilities. Passengers will be driven to their flight directly by either a Porsche or Mercedes-Benz!

Lufthansa baggage allowance varies according to ticket classes and flight routes. As an overview of the allowance for its intercontinental flights, First class passengers are allowed, three bags weighing up to 32kg each, Business class passengers are allowed 2 bags weighing up to 32kg each, Premium Economy class passengers are allowed 2 bags weighing up to 23kg each and Economy class passengers are allowed 1 bag weighing up to 23kg each. Different allowance also applies depending on customers’ Miles & More membership status.
