Founded in 1985, Emirates is the largest airline of the United Arab Emirates. It is, in fact, the largest airline in the Middle East. Its company slogan is Hello Tomorrow. Emirates has been named as the World’s Best Airline 2016 at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2016. Its in-flight entertainment also received the World’s Best Inflight Entertainment for twelve consecutive years in the same award event.

Its parent company is the Emirates Group and the headquarters is located in Dubai. The main operational hub is Dubai International Airport.

Emirates subsidiaries include Emirates Tours, Emirates Holidays and Emirates SkyCargo. It is not currently in any airline alliance. Even without any airlines subsidiary, Emirates flies to over 142 domestic and international destinations across 76 countries in all 6 inhabited continents. It also has codeshare agreements with many major carriers across the globe including Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, Air Mauritius, JetBlue, Japan Airlines, Qantas and Thai Airways.

Emirates current fleet includes Airbus A380-800 and Boeings 777-200ER, 777-200LR, 777-300, 777-300ER, 777-8, and 777-9, totalling to around 240 aircrafts. It has the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 777 and Airbus 380.

Emirates offers three cabin configurations namely First, Business and Economy classes. Depending on the aircrafts, different options are available within each class. Options for First class include Private Suites, Skycruiser and Sleeper seats. All come with seats that can extend into long beds and access to bar and lounge area. Emirates Business class cabin is equally luxurious with extendable seats with partitions, hundreds of entertainment channels and access to on-board bar area. Its Economy seats may not be as wide as compared to the ones in First and Business classes but many passengers consider Emirates Economy class somewhat superior when compared to other airlines Economy class.

Emirates is among the first airlines to introduce personal high quality in-flight entertainment via its ICE system. It offers hundreds of blockbuster movies, TV shows, music channels and variety of games to keep both adults and children entertained during its long-haul flights. On-board WiFi is provided on certain aircrafts and most of its latest aircrafts now have in-seat power outlets to charge gadgets. Hot meals are provided and this varies depending on flight durations. Passengers can even ask for hot cup noddles on demand when meals are not being served on certain routes. All meals are guaranteed halal and passengers with special dietary restrictions can specify their needs when purchasing tickets or during  online check-in. Alcoholic beverages are complimentary.

Emirates frequent flyer program is called Emirates Skywards. Similar to most loyalty programs, passengers collect miles within a calendar year to go up the tier with the higher tiers providing more benefits including seat upgrades, excess baggage allowance and priority check-in and boarding. Some miles will expire within a certain time period. Miles can be used to shop at Emirates High Street to buy branded items at tax-free prices. Miles can also be used to buy tickets with certain Emirates airline partners.

Emirates offers fairly standard baggage allowance. Like most airlines, the allowance varies according to ticket classes and flight routes. It is very easy to use its baggage allowance calculator on Emirates website. By keying in your booking reference number, you will be informed of your allowance for both hand and checked baggage. As a simple rule, Economy class passengers are allowed 30kg of baggage, Business class passengers are allowed 40kg and First class passengers are allowed 50kg. Baggage allowance can also vary depending on customers’ Emirates Skywards membership status. Excess allowance can be bought online at a cheaper rate and Skywards miles could be used to pay for this.
