About British Airways
Founded in 1974 following the merger of British Overseas Airways Corporation, British European Airways, Cambrian Airways, and Northeast Airlines, British Airways is the flag carrier of the United Kingdom. The airline is the largest in the United Kingdom. Its company slogan is to fly, to serve. It has been named as Europe’s Leading Airline to Asian in the World Travel Awards for three consecutive years since 2014.
Its parent company is the International Airlines Group and the headquarters is located in Harmondsworth, England. The airline operates from two operational hubs Gatwick and Heathrow Airports.
British Airways subsidiaries include BA CityFlyer, OpenSkies, and British Airways World Cargo. British Airways is a founding member of Oneworld airline alliance. Together with its subsidiaries, British Airways flies to over 160 domestic and international destinations across all 6 inhabited continents. It also has codeshare agreements with many major carriers across the globe including Air Berlin, Aer Lingus, Bangkok Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, airBaltic, American Airlines, Iberia, Qantas, Royal Jordanian, and Vueling.
British Airways current fleet includes Airbuses A318-100, A319-100, A320-200, A320neo, A321-200, A321neo, and A380-800. The fleets also consists of Boeings 737-400, 747-400, 767-300ER, 777-200, 777-200 ER, 777-300ER, 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10, totalling to around 295 aircrafts. British Airways retired its Concorde operations in 2003.
British Airways offers a mixture of two, three and four cabin configurations depending on the aircrafts and the distance of the flight. In general, these four cabins are First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy classes. First class facilities are only available on long-haul flights and on certain aircrafts. Business class is offered on all mid- and long-haul flights and certain short-haul routes. Economy class is available on all British Airways routes and Premium Economy is only available on long-haul flights. The variation of services offered between the cabins are fairly similar to most airlines in which those in First and Business classes can enjoy luxury cuisine, wide reclining seats and access to VIP lounges.
In-flight entertainment in British Airways comes in the form of AVOD. It offers blockbuster movies, TV shows, music channels and variety of games and language courses to keep both adults and children occupied during its long-haul flights. On-board WiFi is provided on certain aircrafts and most of its latest aircrafts now have in-seat power outlets to charge gadgets. International magazines and newspapers are available. Hot meals are provided and this varies depending on flight durations. Special dietary requirements can be requested on long-haul international flights but snacks provided on short-haul flights do not usually take this into consideration. British Airways has recently partnered up with M&S to provide additional meals for passengers to purchase prior to departure. Alcoholic beverages are complimentary.
British Airways frequent flyer program is called Executive Club. Membership is free and members collect Avios points as they travel to go up the tiers. Avios points can be earned and spent with British Airways and its airline and retail partners around the world.
British Airways offers reasonable baggage allowance and this varies depending on ticket class and destinations. In general, passengers on Economy class are only allowed one bag weighing 23kg. On some routes, economy class may get two bags weighing 23kg each or one bag weighing 32kg each. Passengers on Premium Economy passengers are allowed either two bags weighing 23kg each or two bags weighing 32kg each depending on their routes. Passengers in Business class are allowed two bags weighing 32kg each on all routes and those on First class are allowed three bags weighing 32kg each. Executive Club and Oneworld members may also be allowed excess baggage depending on their statuses.
